Pittsburgh Faces

People We Love opens in Pittsburgh on 9th April, 2022.

Pittsburgh is only the second edition of the work, after York, and the first in North America. Viewed together, the seven hours of diverse U.S. portraits we've assembled speak eloquently of Pittsburgh, the specifics of its time and place. I've loved working with these portraits in preparation for the show. Still, as a European, it's much harder for me to read the social clues of dress, accessories, and hairstyles and accurately place these 'foreign' faces within their community.

It’s a fascinating distinction between cultures, only noticeable when these faces are viewed as a collective. It becomes wholly irrelevant when staring directly into the eyes of any single portrait. Reading these open, vulnerable, and loving faces is a universal act of inventive compassion. And that’s the essential point of People We Love.

Whatever our differences, however much we don’t know, empathy begins as an act of imagination.
