The Square

Interactive Kinetic Light Installation. 2005

The Square is a study of human interference in an imagined world. Members of the public are invited to enter a microscopic world created entirely with projected light, in which they can choose to influence the behaviours of the cell-like inhabitants. These autonomous life-forms are both attracted to and repelled by their human visitors, turning on each other as their world is disturbed. The audience are invited to try to establish what forces are at work and to make decisions about how to intervene. Is intervention the solution? Left to their own devices, the life-forms establish a seemingly peaceful equilibrium until the next visitor arrives…
