Tom met Kit in 1998 when he joined KMA in its previous incarnation as a multimedia design and development house. Whilst leading the development of projects for clients including Channel 4, the BBC and the National Museum of Science and Industry, Tom began to experiment with Director, Flash, Java and other technologies to create small visual ‘toys’ that could be distributed via the web. By adding real-time input technologies, and scaling the complexity and refinement of these programmes, they found there way onto a larger stage – by 2001, Tom was developing real-time video applications for the music industry, with his graphics appearing on stage with the likes of Kylie Minogue, Ash, Justin Timberlake, Craig David and many others. KMA were asked to provide live graphics for the Brit Awards 2001 and 2002, and the Smash! Hits awards in 2002.
In 2005, Tom – working with Phoenix Dance Theatre, Kit Monkman and Mike Ward – produced the graphics for Darshan Singh Bhuller’s ‘Eng-er-land’, and in the same year, he developed KMA’s first piece of public installation art, ‘Dancing in the Streets’.
Since then, most of Tom’s time has been devoted to developing interactive motion graphics for large scale public installations and theatre, film and TV projects. Recent projects include the installations ‘Flock’ and ‘The Hive’ and development of the inter-city game of light football – ’5 Courts’.
In 2006 Tom was awarded a fellowship from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) to enable him to spend more time working on experimental installation and theatrical technologies within public and theatrical performance contexts.
Tom’s skill base now includes Programming in MAX/MSP, Jitter, Java, Processing, Director & Flash; Filming; Motion graphics creation and manipulation in Lightwave, Shake, Boujou, Final Cut Pro, Isadora, as well as playing Bassoon, Didjeridoo, Drums & Percussion, to varying levels of refinement.
